The ITB Sustainable Vehicle Production 2025 Conference was held on February 26-27, 2025, at the Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel in Michigan, USA. The event focused on innovative technologies and strategies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive industry, with an emphasis on the complete supply and use chain from raw materials to component production, vehicle assembly and use and finally, dismantling. In addition, the various approaches to life cycle analysis and circularity were discussed.

    Highlights:

Keynote addresses by both Toyota (Day 1) and Hyundai (Day 2) were provided. Mark Bacchus of Toyota Motor North America presentation was entitled Stepping into Carbon and Plastics Pollution Headwinds and explored Toyota’s strategies for tackling carbon neutrality challenges, focusing on emissions reduction and sustainable materials. Amanda Nubby of Hyundai Motor Group addressed Bridging the Gap to Carbon Neutrality and provided an overview of Hyundai’s roadmap to carbon neutrality, emphasizing regulatory alignment and system-wide sustainability strategies.

Rivian took the stage to deliver an insightful talk on carbon footprint assessment underscoring the need for harmonization in sustainability metrics, particularly in the context of evolving industry regulations, emission reduction goals, and reporting standards.

Regulatory impacts, data challenges, and emission hot spots in EV battery production were addressed by General Motors. Efforts to navigate regulatory complexities while implementing innovative solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of EV batteries were highlighted. Emphasis was placed on the important of not just considering the different raw materials but also the critical importance of origin on the real carbon footprint of the material.

Key suppliers and industry leaders also provided insights into cutting-edge materials, circular economy practices, and new technologies shaping the future of sustainable vehicle production. Conference sessions included:

    • Bio-Based Materials: Advancing Performance And Sustainability
    • Designing for Circularity: Implementing Real-World Solutions
    • From Concept to Practice: A Tier-1 Approach to Sustainability
    • Strategies to Lower Carbon Footprints
